Mentor Information

We are appreciative of those of you acting as mentors for candidates in the alternative licensure program. It is critical to have a support that is non-supervisory in nature, someone you can ask silly questions, and someone to help you figure out the logistics of your role as a teacher.

Mentor Role

The role of the mentor is a critical support role.  This person should not have a supervisory relationship with the candidate.  Mentors are experienced teachers who constantly model the quality standards with demonstrated excellence.  Mentors will serve as a member of the candidate support team, are responsible for providing ongoing counseling, and support the alternative teacher.

Payment

For their contribution to the Alternative Teacher Candidates program, mentors will be paid a one-time stipend in the amount of $750 plus applicable benefits (PERA and Medicare) upon completion of the mentor’s required duties and paperwork.

Mentors are expected to provide a minimum of 30 hours on contact time with candidates including daily/weekly just in time support, monthly “cafe conversations,” and informal observations. Mentors are provided a book (Mentoring in Action or Mentoring New Special Education Teachers) to guide their work. Each book has a nice calendar of activities to work from.

Mentors do not qualify as Independent Contractors per IRS regulations.  Due to the large number of participants, we are not able to put mentors in the CR BOCES payroll system. Therefore, the stipend amount will be paid directly to the employing school district by Colorado River BOCES.  The participating school district is to, in turn, pay the stipend to the mentor on the next regularly scheduled payroll. Payment occurs in May.

Mentor Agreement & Payment Information

All mentors must complete the Mentor Agreement in order to be paid.
